Goodwood Racecourse History

The earliest record of racing in the vicinity of Goodwood was in April 1801 when the 3rd Duke of Richmond, ably supported by the Goodwood Hunt, staged a two day programme on a newly designed course on a section of his estate known as The Harrowby, about 3 furlongs from the site of the current grandstand.  Prior to this date racing had taken place at nearby Petworth Park, enabling Officers of the Sussex Militia, of which the Duke of Richmond was a Colonel, to hone their riding skills. However, the Park was owned by the Earl of Egremont, and he refused permission for the races to continue, at which point the Duke of Richmond stepped in and offered part of his Goodwood Estate. The results of that initial 2 day programme, attended by a crowd in excess of 15,000, are shown below:-

After racing each day a Ball was held at The Swan.
Such was the success of that inaugural meeting that within a year  a second 3 day meeting, this time under Jockey Club rules, was organised and a wooden stand was completed about 3 furlongs from the site of the present grandstand.  On the first day the Duke had a winner with Cedar, who ran again on the final day, only to be beaten into third by the Prince of Wales' Trumpator. At that same meeting the City of Chichester's Plate, and a Ladies' Plate, was won by Mystery owned by a certain Mr Ladbroke.

Goodwood continues to thrive today, whereas nearby Gatwick closed its gates for the final time in 1940.

Much better known as an airport, the old Gatwick Racecourse was situated midway between London and Brighton, first opening for business on Wednesday 7th October 1891. The old Manor of Gatwick, and its surrounding estate, was owned by Mr John Farlow, and he sold it on 13th December 1890. The course was an oval of a mile and 7 furlongs with the slightest of inclines, and the main course joined the straight mile course with about 5 furlongs to the winning post. The Aintree Grand National was run at Gatwick on 3 occasions during the first World War. Once War broke out in 1939 it was highly likely that the vast open space of Gatwick would be used by the military. A final two day National Hunt was staged on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th March 1940, while the final Flat race meeting took place on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th June 1940.

The 3rd Duke of Richmond died in 1806, the Goodwood Estate passing to his nephew who became the 4th Duke of Richmond. Within two years he had introduced the Goodwood Silver Cup over 3 miles. Bucephalus won the event three times in the first four years and his owner was allowed to keep the Silver Cup permanently after securing his third victory.

The present day Goodwood Gold Cup was first run at the Spring meeting in 1812 over a 3 miles trip and was won by Shoestrings. The meeting moved from Spring to July in 1814, a move recommended by the Duke's son the Earl of March, setting the foundations for the present day ‘Glorious Goodwood’ Festival. It was an inspired suggestion because the date fell at the end of the London season and provided the aristocracy an opportunity to relax and enjoy high class racing. However, in the early years the Goodwood Cup was not widely accepted as the top class staying race it is today. It was only contested once in the years 1815 to 1824, being won in 1816 by Scarecrow. The 4th Duke of Richmond died in 1819 and his son succeeded him. In order to increase the popularity of the Goodwood Cup the distance was reduced from 3 miles to 2 miles 5 furlongs in 1826 and within 5 years it was attracting top class horses.

Goodwood racecourse is well-renowned for staging unusual novelty charity races. The current version is the Magnolia Cup, an event which pits the ridings skills of leading women in business, sport, media and fashion, dressed in bespoke racing silks, against each other over 5 ½ furlongs on Ladies Day of the Goodwood Festival, supporting the charity 'Wellbeing of Women'. However, back in the early years of the 19th century, between 1823 and 1833, the novelty race was the Cocked Hat Stakes over 6 furlongs of the Two Year Old course. The race was restricted to gentlemen riders who were Members of the Goodwood racing Club, each set to carry 11st 7lbs, but with an allowance of 7lbs for any rider wearing a cocked hat. The 5th Duke was a passionate supporter of racing and oversaw the building of a grandstand with the capacity to hold 3,000 people in 1830. He was rewarded with almost immediate recompense because in 1830 Priam (SR 2066) won the Epsom Derby and went on to land the Goodwood Cup in consecutive years in 1831 and 1832.

A remarkable event took place at Goodwood in 1836 when Lord George Bentinck's Elis finished second to Hornsea in the Goodwood Cup only days before the Doncaster St Leger. In the days without horseboxes it was unheard of for a St Leger candidate to run at Goodwood shortly before taking on the Doncaster classic. However, Bentinck had invented the horsebox, and Elis duly won the St Leger to land a huge coup. It was during the 5th Duke’s reign over Goodwood that many of the top class races, which form the backbone todays Goodwood Festival, were introduced. The Molecomb Stakes, over 5 furlongs, was introduced in 1829 when won by Convert; the Stewards Cup, over 6 furlongs, was contested for the first time in 1840 when won by Epirus trained by John Scott, although it had been run since 1834 in a different guise. The inaugural running of the Nassau Stakes over 1 mile was staged in 1840 when won by Rosa Bianca. The race honoured the close relationship between the 5th Duke of Richmond and the House of Orange-Nassau, which played a prominent part in shaping politics in the Netherlands. The most important race in the Goodwood calendar is the Sussex Stakes which was first held in 1841 as a 6 furlong race for 2 year olds when won by Barrier owned by Mr Treen and ridden by John Conolly. However, it could not compete with the popularity of the Stewards Cup, or indeed the Goodwood Cup, meaning that in the first 37 years of its existence it was uncontested on 25 occasions, with 14 walk-overs. Radical action was required to distinguish it from the Stewards Cup, and in 1878 the race was extended to its present day mile when won by Clocher.

In 1935 Mahmoud, owned by the Aga Khan and ridden by Charlie Smirke, won the Richmond Stakes before going on to victory a year later in the Derby. Just after World War II ended Goodwood added an August meeting to its calendar, lasting from 1946 until 1948, but that experiment was not repeated in 1949. In 1951 Goodwood marked its 150th anniversary by issuing a racecard with scenes from early meetings and a potted history of its four most important races. By 1953 the Goodwood festival was boasting crowds in excess of 55,000, including thousands gathered on Trundle Hill with its wonderful view of the racecourse. As soon as the 1979 Festival was completed the magnificent old grandstand, which had served Goodwood well for decades, was demolished to make way for a new 'March Grandstand' which was opened on 29th July 1980 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Currently the course stages 19 fixtures annually between April and October.

Annual metal members badges began to emerge in 1965. Prior to this there were cardboard badges for the July Festival (Glorious Goodwood). There were also a series of day badges for each of the three or four days of the Festival.
The Goodwood Cup, currently a Group 1 race, is now contested over 2 miles, although the first version of the Cup was staged over 3 miles in 1808. Bucephalus won the event three times in the first four years and his owner was allowed to keep the Silver Cup permanently after securing his third victory. The current Goodwood Cup was first contested in 1812 when won by Shoestrings. Over a period of time the event was reduced to 2 miles 5 furlongs and is currently run over a 2 mile trip. Full results are shown below.
